DIGESTIVE HEALTH – AN INTRODUCTION FOR
HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

Good digestive health is important because it affects all aspects of one's life. Yet, according to the American Gastroenterological Association, Americans report more than 81 million cases of chronic digestive problems per year. To raise health professional awareness of the importance of good digestive health, in 2005, the California Dried Plum Board launched the Digestive Health Organization.

Digestive health can impact lifestyle in many ways. A 2006 survey found that digestive health issues make 34 percent of people uncomfortable in social situations; cause 23 percent to feel depressed or lack energy; and cause nearly 20 percent to limit physical activity or social situations altogether. In fact, digestive health problems are especially prevalent among travelers, 77 percent of whom report at least occasional digestive health problems. Nearly half – 42 percent-report constipation while travelling.

Consumers often don't consider food choices or other behavior as important tools to improve their digestive health. But picking the right foods is one of the easiest ways to improve digestive health. California Dried Plums top the list of easy and convenient foods shown to help maintain good digestive health (link to article Dried Plums and Digestive Health, a review of the science). And because dried plums are a fruit containing a powerhouse of nutrients, such as potassium, magnesium and fiber, they contribute positively to the nutrient density of the diet.
