SACRAMENTO, CA (February 27, 2006) – Digestive problems are on the rise and affecting American pocketbooks and lifestyle. According to the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), Americans report more than 81 million cases of chronic digestive problems each year. These may include heartburn, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea and nausea. Consumers' social lives are suffering too. People often skip parties or miss out on leisure activities because of poor digestive health.
Unfortunately, consumers aren't considering food choices or other behavior as important tools to improve their digestive health. According to a recent survey by MarketTools, Inc. and the California Dried Plum Board (CDPB), only a quarter of respondents consider the impact food choices have on their digestive health on a regular basis. While, more than 50 percent of those surveyed have grown more concerned about their digestive health in the past two years, and a solid 80 percent feel it's important to improve their body's digestive health – they're not doing much about it. This reveals a major gap between consumers' concerns and behavior in maintaining good digestive health.
"Picking the right foods is one of the easiest ways to improve your digestive health. Eating a wide variety of nutrient rich fruits and vegetables that are beneficial to your digestive tract is the first step. This includes dried fruits, like dried plums, as well as fresh berries and apples," says Leo Treyzon, M.D., clinical instructor of clinical nutrition and digestive diseases at University of California, Los Angeles. "Other foods containing fiber, protein, calcium and vitamin D are also good choices. It's important to remember that a whole foods diet based on fruits, whole grains and vegetables is a diet premised on nature's own functional foods."
To help consumers find quick and easy ways to maintain and improve good digestive health the CDPB has created the web site, www.tummywise.com. This web site provides digestive and nutritional information, along with an opportunity to ask a dietitian questions. Recipes are also available to teach consumers how to easily incorporate foods that support good digestive health into their diet.
"This is an excellent platform for consumers who want to learn quickly about how to improve their lives and overall health," says CDPB Executive Director Richard L. Peterson. "More and more people are being affected by digestive health problems in their everyday lives. This site will be a great resource for people that may not be able to easily discuss digestive health issues. However, consumers still need to talk with their health care provider about their digestive health problems."
According to the survey, digestive health impacts consumer lifestyles to the point where:
- 34 percent feel uncomfortable in social situations
- 32 percent have experienced an embarrassing situation
- 23 percent have been depressed and lacked energy
- Nearly 20 percent avoid work or social situations altogether
- Nearly 20 percent limit physical activities/exercise
- 17 percent experience heartburn or abdominal pain more than five times a month
Treyzon says that as people learn more about ways to improve their digestive health, they'll realize its positive impact on lifestyle and overall health. "I incorporate dried plums into my lifestyle because they taste delicious, are portable and have a unique combination of nutrients important to building good digestive health," says Treyzon. He added that good digestive health improves immune system functionality and may cause reduction in the risk for some chronic diseases, such as heart disease and some forms of cancer.
